Carbondale’s location in Southern Illinois provides a natural backdrop for outdoor recreation, and the Carbondale Park District is proud to offer programs that reflect this unique setting. With access to parks, trails, and other outdoor amenities, we encourage the community to enjoy the outdoors while fostering appreciation for the region’s natural beauty.
Family Campout
Spend the night outdoors with the Carbondale Park District during our Family Campout at Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center in Makanda! Families will enjoy a guided overnight camping experience filled with campfire fun, s’mores, stories, songs, and time together in the great outdoors.
All meals, activities, and firewood are included, and camping equipment—including tents and sleeping bags—is available by request, so even first-time campers can join in the fun.

A parent or legal guardian must attend with children, and a signed waiver is required for each participant. Space is limited, so advance registration is required.

Introduction to Paddling: Sunset Edition
Learn the basics of paddling while enjoying a beautiful evening on the water! This beginner-friendly clinic will introduce participants to basic canoe and kayak paddling techniques, water safety, and boat maneuvering before heading out for a relaxed group paddle as the sun begins to set.
No previous paddling experience is necessary. Come learn something new, build confidence on the water, and take in the evening scenery during this awesome outdoor experience. Lifeguard will be on site. Ages 3 and up with a participating grownup. No drop-offs. All participants must pre-register & have a signed CPKD waiver.
